Ocular emergencies requiring prompt attention include the following:

1) sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, even if painless and transient

2) symptoms of flashing lights or new floaters

3) lacerations involving the eye

4) all chemical spills to the eye, especially alkaline compounds

5) difficulty moving the one or both eyes, especially accompanied by change in pupil size.

Some of the symptoms of ocular emergencies are subtle and easy to confuse, like vomiting from acute angle closure, which is a rare form of glaucoma. When in doubt, call us.
